Bladder cancer risk factors

Numerous factors can contribute to the development of bladder cancer - causes are:

Smoking

Cigarette smoking is the major risk factor for bladder cancer, passive smoking also increases the risk to get it. The longer one smokes, the higher the risk is for bladder cancer. Clinical statistics show that half of of all cases of bladder cancer may be attributable to smoking.

Occupational risks

A total of over 50 different chemical substances are known as causes of bladder cancer. For example, aromatic amines such as aniline, beta-naphthylamine, benzidine, or benzidine are used in the rubber industry and dye industry. Bladder cancer is recognized by chronic exposure to these and other aromatic amines as occupational disease.

In tropical countries, schistosomiasis (also known as schistosomiasis) is one of the most important risk factors for bladder cancer. By contact with water, in which the intermediate hosts (water snails) reside, schistosomenlarven can penetrate the human. In some regions of Africa, almost all the sick people are, because they swim in contaminated lakes or rivers, or use the contaminated water for drinking. About 300 million people worldwide are affected by schistosomiasis. If there is an infection for many years and no therapy, bladder cancer often occurs as a late consequence. There is then a squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder. The schistosomiasis also affects travelers in Western countries through tourism. In case of diarrhea, bloody stool and red urine after a stay in the tropics, you should think of this disease and consult a physician.
