Bladder cancer is a malignant tumor that originates in the inner wall of bladder. In the majority of cases, bladder cancer develops from specialized mucosal cells of membrane lining of the bladder, the so-called transitional cells, and hence is a transitional cell carcinoma. Other less common forms of bladder cancer are squamous and glandular cells carcinoma.
Depending on growth and stage, bladder cancer is classified into superficial bladder cancer, and infiltrating bladder cancer meaning ingrowth into the tissue of bladder wall. The infiltrating bladder cancer is an advanced cancer, that reache deep tissues to spread to other distant organs via bloodstream or lymph fluid, or to adjacent organs by direct penetration through the bladder, e.g. in prostate, uterus.
Bladder cancer incidence
About three percent of all malignant tumors are carcinomas of the bladder. Worldwide each year, about 360,000 people are newly diagnosed with bladder cancer: UK 10,700/ De 30,000/ US 55,000. Male is four times as common as female in the incidence of bladder cancer. And the bladder cancer in men is the fourth most common cancer after lung, prostate and colon cancer.
